Shia Islam explained

What is Shia Islam? What differentiates it from Sunni Islam?

Articles of Faith

The fundamental beliefs in Islam are:

  1. The oneness of God (Tawhid)
Muslims believe that God is one, was not created, does not have partners, nor does He have parts.
  2. Justice (Adalah)
God is just. Predestination is not an Islamic concept.
  3. Prophethood (Nubuwah)
Belief in the prophethood of all the prophets from Adam to Mohammad, with the Prophet Mohammad being the final prophet (commonly referred to as the ‘seal of the prophets’).
  4. Leadership (Imamah)
Divinely-appointed leadership of the community is a fundamental belief of Islam. The leaders of the community after the death of the Prophet were appointed by God, and includes twelve imams, from Ali to the Mahdi. This is a fundamentally different belief between Sunni and Shia Muslims, as the Sunnis reject this belief entirely (instead, they have the concept of caliphate).
  5. Resurrection (Qiyyimah)
    Belief in life after death.

Ancillaries of Faith

These five prayers may be performed at a minimum of three instances according to the Quran, but it is recommended that they be performed at the five appointed times. The prayers are known as: morning (fajr), midday (dhuhr), afternoon (asr), evening (maghrib), and night (isha).
